Peonies Are A Favorite for Sedona Weddings

Popular Sedona Wedding FlowersHi everyone! Here is this week’s Fleur du Jour spotlight.  Come by each week and read our Friday Finds and discover all kinds of great ideas, information and insights about having a wonderful wedding in Sedona.

Peonies are just about every bride’s favorite, especially those having their weddings in Sedona.  Who can resist these huge lavish blooms?  With a recorded history that dates back thousands of years, it’s not surprising that even the mythology surrounding the origin of the peony has multiple versions.  One legend has it that the peony is named after Paeon, a physician to the gods, who received the flower on Mount Olympus from the mother of Apollo.  Another tells the story of that same physician who was “saved” from the fate of dying as other mortals by being turned into the flower we know today as the Peony.

The traditional floral symbol of China, the state flower of Indiana and the 12th wedding anniversary flower, peonies are known as the flower of riches and honor.  With their lush, rounded bloom, peonies embody romance and prosperity and are regarded as an omen of good fortune and a happy marriage.

Sedona Wedding Bouquet with Peonies

There are many varieties and colors of Peonies.  One of the favorites at Events By Show Stoppers is the coral color.  Coral Peonies have fewer petals allowing them to completely open, exposing their lovely golden-yellow centers.  Several colors open beautifully while others stay more clustered and full.  It all depends on the design and effect desired.

Because of their size, it does not take many to fill out a bouquet.  Show Stopper’s designer, Ken Heflin, loves to mix different textures and flowers with analogous colors such as ruby reds, deep oranges, hot pinks and salmon colors.  This lovely bouquet, made for L’Auberge Catering Sales Manager, Kara Cristman is a perfect example.  Together with two colors of Peonies, Ken used great combinations of ranunculus, glorioso lilies, rose hips, orchids, cockscomb and roses.

Some of the most popular months to have a wedding in Sedona are April, May and June…. perfect Peony season. Peonies can be purchased during other months but prices will vary.  When Peonies first come on market around the beginning of April, they are more expensive.  The cost of all flowers, especially pinks and whites, are inflated around Mother’s Day, making Peonies pricey as well.  Prices go down as June approaches making Memorial Day weekend a perfect time for using Peonies in a Sedona wedding.

Symbolism:  Peony…  Bashfulness.
